TIPS ON WRITING A COLLEGE RESEARCH PAPER

As a college or university student, you are to plan, research, organize, write, cite, and evaluate your papers. Here are some tips or information that will help you evaluate your research paper before submission.

Introduction

• Is there a clear thesis statement?

• Does the introduction provide a clear overview of the paper’s contents?

Structure

• Does the structure reflect a careful treatment of the topic at hand?

• Are the transitions between paragraphs and sections clear?

• Is there a table of contents?

• Are proper headings used?

• Is the treatment of the topic logically oriented?

Conclusion

• Does the conclusion offer a good summary of issues treated in the paper?

• Does it offer some concrete possibilities for understanding the topic at hand?

• Does the conclusion offer suggestions for further study?

Content

• Are the issues raised by this topic properly treated?

• Are issues related to the significance of the topic clearly presented?

• Are the relevant parts described and explained clearly?

• Is the material covered accurate?

• Does the student utilize scholarly materials where needed?

• Is the analysis of the topic thorough?

Materials/Sources

• Does the bibliography contain the recommended scholarly sources?

• Are materials properly cited and quoted?

• Are quotes relevant to the study at hand?

• Is current scholarship used?

• Does the paper contain the proper number of citations for a research paper?

Style

• Is the paper properly formatted?

• Is there a table of contents?

• Is the paper without spelling and grammatical errors?

• Is the paper without syntax errors?

• Are footnotes and bibliography properly formatted?

• Does the paper reflect a graduate-level of vocabulary?
